Pungent Odor Prompts Evacuation Of Ellington Manufacturing Plant

ELLINGTON, CT — A pungent ammonia-type smell caused evacuation of a juice processing plant on Route 83 Tuesday morning, as emergency personnel converged on the scene.

The incident at Country Pure Foods, near the Vernon town line, resulted in a plethora of emergency vehicles, including multiple fire trucks, an ambulance and state police. As of 9:15 a.m., an alarm was still sounding as personnel in Hazmat gear worked to contain the scent, which was confirmed to Patch by an ambulance crew member.

The Ellington fire marshal was spotted at the scene. There were no visible signs of injuries.

Traffic was not affected on Route 83.
