Sandy Beach Water Passes the Test

The town beach at Crystal Lake was back open, health officials said.

ELLINGTON, CT – It was rainy and not quite a swimming day, but Sandy Beach was back open Saturday as elevated coliform levels subsided, North Central Health District officials said.

The swimming area was closed Thursday and Friday. The water passed the tests in time for the weekend, though, health officials said.

Stormwater runoff is a common reason why elevated levels of coliform show up in lake water, health district officials said. Storms earlier this week were the likely culprits, officials said.

The elevated bacteria levels were confined to the south end of Crystal Lake, near Sandy Beach, health district officials said. Water at the state boat launch and and at the inlet off Conklin Road had tested OK, health district officials said.
