Soapstone Mountain Observation Tower to Remain Closed

State officials say the tower will not re-open this season.

One of the highest points in north-central Connecticut - the observation tower atop Soapstone Mountain in Shenipsit State Forest - will remain closed indefinitely, the Journal Inquirer reported.

The tower was officially closed temporarily last October, but a Department of Energy and Environmental Protection official told the JI it will remain closed at least through the end of this year.

“Early this summer our engineering office evaluated the tower and determined that it should be closed to the public until a major renovation can take place,” the official told the paper. “We know it’s very popular, so we’ll work to get it done as soon as possible.”

The lower portion of the steps leading to the top of the tower was recently removed to deter climbers.
