Somers American Legion Post collecting worn American flags for dignified retirement

Flag Day 2017 - Retire your tired flag today. Have Old Glory replaced and flying proudly

The American Legion’s Buck - Dubiel Post 101 of Somers is collecting old, worn, tired, tattered, frayed, ripped or faded U.S. flags. The post has flag collection boxes at the following locations:

  • Somers Fire Department - 400 Main Street (Rt 190), Somers
  • Somers Town Hall - 600 Main Street (Rt 190), Somers
  • Somers Public Library - 2 Vision Boulevard, Somers
  • Somers Senior Center - 19 Battle Street, Somers
  • Somers Transfer Station - 127 Egypt Road, Somers

The Buck - Dubiel Post 101 is named in honor of Roy A. Buck, the first Somers resident killed in action during World War I, and Stanley J. Dubiel, the first Somers resident killed in action during World War II.
The flags collected by Post 101 will receive a dignified conclusion to their years of service at a formal flag retirement ceremony the post will hold in November. Though the organization consists of veterans from all branches of the military and multiple generations of servicemen, its membership has a shared commonality in their reverence for the quintessential symbol of American freedom.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The American Legion is one of the few organizations that regularly retire old flags with a formal ceremony, having first started the tradition in 1937.
