The Somers Fire Department Awards Dedicated Members

SOMERS, CT — The Somers Fire Department held its annual awards banquet on Saturday, October 14th. Every year, two members are chosen for Member of the Year awards.

Engineer Sam Corriveau received the Firefighter of the Year award. Engineer Corriveau joined the fire department in 2018 as a Cadet. He comes from a fire department family and is the grandson of Past Chief, but still very active member, Ed Pagani. Shortly after becoming a regular member, he became certified as Firefighter 1, Emergency Medical Responder, and shortly after, Firefighter 2. He recently tested for, and received, the title of Engineer after being qualified on all 10 apparatus. Engineer Corriveau now puts in countless hours not only as a driver and firefighter, but also as a trainer for new drivers on both the fire and medical apparatus. He also puts in many hours as an ambulance driver and medical first responder. Engineer Corriveau is always willing to help new members and many look up to him for help and advice.

EMT Cadence Bidwell received the Emergency Medical Service Member of the Year. EMT Bidwell joined the fire department in 2018 as a Cadet. Shortly after, she obtained her Emergency Medical Responder certification. Two years later, She became a regular member and obtained her Emergency Medical Technician certification. EMT Bidwell also became qualified to drive the ambulances. On top of volunteering many hours per week as an EMT or Driver on the ambulance, She is the Head Advisor for the Somers Fire Department Cadet Program. The program allows teenagers, ages 15-18, to respond to emergencies and gain valuable life and career experience. She is also an active member of the Somers Fire Department Association’s Board of Directors.

Both of these members give up countless hours of their time to volunteer and serve the community. The Somers Fire Department thanks them for their selfless service to the Town of Somers and beyond.

Established in 1937, the Somers Fire Department (SFD) proudly protects more than 10,000 people living in the 28.5 square mile area that makes up the Town of Somers, Connecticut. The Department’s mission is to develop, organize, and manage effective Fire and Emergency Medical Services that minimize the impact of emergencies on life and property within the Town of Somers. In addition, the Department provides mutual aid support to those surrounding communities that, in time of need, may request assistance.

As a combination department, SFD relies on both paid staff and volunteers, all of whom are professionally trained, selfless, dedicated, and work together to provide round-the-clock response services – firefighting as well as four levels of emergency medical care – to the Town of Somers. The SFD can always use more help and is currently accepting volunteer membership applications.

The SFD operates out of a single firehouse, stationed at 400 Main Street, and has 10 pieces of apparatus, including three ambulances, two tankers, two pumpers, and three service vehicles.
