Somers Girls Repeat As Class S Cross Country Champions

The Spartans placed five runners in the top 18 to easily breeze to their second straight class championship Saturday at Wickham Park.

MANCHESTER, CT — For the second straight year, Somers cruised to the team title in the Class S girls cross country championships Saturday at Wickham Park.

Five Spartans placed in the top 18, a pack mentality which carried the squad to 45 overall points, 30 better than runner-up Lyme-Old Lyme. Portland finished a distant third.

Sophomore Stephanie Burzynski led Somers by placing second to individual champion Chase Gilbert of Lyme-Old Lyme. Ella Campion was eighth and Julia Settevendemie finished 10th, with Sara St. Germain (16th), Dara Salka (18th), April Kelly (37th) and Gracie Flynn (41st) also running well in the field of 121 competitors.

The team moves on to the State Open Nov. 4 at 2 p.m., also at Wickham Park.
