Somers Girls "Three-Peat" At Class S Cross Country Championships

The Spartans won their third straight divisional title at Wickham Park, while the Ellington girls placed second in Class M.

MANCHESTER, CT — For the third straight year, Somers was victorious in team competition at the CIAC Class S girls cross country chamionships Saturday at Wickham Park. And for the third straight year, the Spartans' margin of victory increased significantly over the previous season.

Led by four finishers who placed in the overall to 10, Somers compiled 43 points to easily outdistance the 119 of runner-up Lyman Memorial. Last fall, the Spartans posted a 45-75 edge over Old Lyme, and in 2021, they edged Bolton by a 48-66 margin.

For the second straight year, Stephanie Burzynski was the second overall finisher behind individual champion Chase Gilbert of Old Lyme. Julia Settevendemie was fifth, Ava Depeau seventh and Sara St. Germain 10th for the Spartans, who also received a solid effort from Dara Salka.

In Class M, the Ellington girls placed five runners in the top 25, but were unable to overcome the pack strategy of champion Mercy, who prevailed with 37 points to 57 for the runner-up Knights. Karla Greenwood paced Ellington in fifth place, followed by Jenna Luoma (8th), Keira Warner (11th), Julia Goric (14th) and Addison Aubin (22nd).

The boys' teams from Ellington and Somers each placed ninth in Classes M and S, respectively.
