Somers Obituary: Michael Provencher, Sr., 64

Michael retired in 2010 from the Town of Somers as Parks Maintenance Supervisor.

Michael E. Provencher, Sr., a/k/a "Poncho", 64, of Somers, loving husband of Robin (Randall) Provencher, entered into Eternal Rest on Saturday, February 9, 2019, after a brief illness.

Michael was born August 19, 1954, in Hartford, the son of the late Earl Sr. and Claire (Leete) Provencher. He was a graduate of Somers High School Class of 1973. After high school Michael enlisted in the United States Army where he was part of the 1st U.S. Army Pistol Team while stationed in Virginia, and was honorably discharged in 1980.

He retired in 2010 from the Town of Somers as Parks Maintenance Supervisor. In the 1990s, he also enjoyed working with American Thunder Fireworks as a Pyrotechnics Professional.

Mike has been a founding member of the Somers Sportsmen's Association since 1971 and has served on its Board of Trustees for the last few years. He was an NRA certified pistol, rifle and shotgun instructor, former Chairman of the Somers Republican Town Committee, former member of the Somers Civil Preparedness Committee, former chairman of the Department of Public Works Building Committee and a former Town Safety Officer.

In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, competitive shooting, and riding his Harley. Mike was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, but most of all he cherished his three grandsons; they were the light of his life.

In addition to his wife, Robin to whom he was married 38 years he is also survived by three children, Sara Tennant and her husband, John of Stafford, Michael Provencher, II of Windsor Locks and Alyssa Provencher of Charlotte, NC; three brothers, John Provencher of Suffield, Earl Provencher, Jr. and his wife, Connie, and William Provencher and his wife, Anne all of Enfield; his sister, Karen Frantz and her husband, Jim of Agawam, MA; his sister-in-law Kim Provencher, also of Enfield; his three grandsons, Marcus Williams, of Enfield, Owen Provencher of Windsor Locks, and Ian Tennant of Stafford and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, from 4 pm to 8 pm at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., (Route 190) Somers. A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at 11 am at the Somers Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be held in Somers Center Cemetery.
