Somers Obituary: Stuart Benson, 94

Stuart G. Benson, 94, of Somers, husband of Joyce (Judson) Benson, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2018 at Evergreen Health Care Center.

Stu was born and raised in Springfield, MA where he attended Tech High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and later earned a B.A. degree from A.I.C. He was employed as a Claims Examiner for Monarch Life Insurance Company, and also repaired and tuned pianos.

Later, Stu and Joyce became interested in rocks and minerals. They were active members of the Connecticut Valley Mineral Club, and owned a business called Stone Age. Stu enjoyed cutting and polishing stones and doing some silversmithing. He also spoke to school groups and Scouts, and got many young people interested in minerals.

In addition to his wife Joyce, Stuart is survived by his children Carol and Bill, and his grandchildren Mathew and Andrew.

The family will gather privately to honor his memory.
