SOMERS, CT — June is an important month for dog owners and Somers officials are notifying local pet lovers of two initiatives that impact them.

First, June is the month for dog owners to renew their licenses, which are available in the Somers town clerk's office.

Town officials said all dogs over 6 months old must be licensed and that also requires current rabies shots and a spay/neuter certificate (if necessary).

Licenses can be obtained either in person at the town clerk's office, by mail, by drop-off box or at a special vaccination clinic the town is hosting later this month.

As for the vaccine clinic, the town is having it at the Somers Department of Public Works garage Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The DPW garage is at 93 Egypt Road in Somers.

This event is for dogs and cats and all dogs must be licensed and cats must be in carriers.

The aim of the event is to provide low-cost vaccine options for pet owners, with the Fenton River Veterinary Hospital providing the services.

The vaccines cost: $10 for rabies; $35 for bordetella; $40 for Lyme disease; $25 for distemper; and $60 for 4DX tests, which screen for heartworm, Lyme disease, anaplasma and ehrlichia.
