Somers Senior Center News

The Somers Senior Center is bustling! This is what's coming up!

The Somers Senior Center is located at 19 Battle Street in Somers, CT. You can contact us at 860-763-4379, find us on facebook under “Somers Senior Center” or visit us on www.somersct.gov. The following events and trips are being offered. Sign-up is required for all events.

Tuesday May 5th at 1pm, there will be a Cinco de Mayo celebration featuring mariachi music, chips & salsa, and “mock” Margaritas!

On Wednesday May 6th at 1pm, you can create your own jewelry with Beads by Sandy! The cost is $3 per person plus supplies.

On Thursday May 7th, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day with tea/coffee, Petits Fours (mini cakes!) and Music from Marengo: a one-man-band, performing an intriguing mix of musical selections using a variety of instruments. This is a fun and educational program performed by Joel Meginsky, Springfield Symphony Orchestra member and retired Springfield music teacher.

Primary Eyecare will be at the Somers Senior Center on Wednesday May 13th at 12:45pm to play Eye Care BINGO! You can learn about cataracts, Glaucoma, dry eyes, flashes and floaters, eye lid surgery and Macular Degeneration when you join us for this fun and informative activity. There will be prizes, optical coupons and cookies!

The “Friday Matinee” for the month of May will be “Forrest Gump”. Showtime is Friday May 15th at 1pm. Popcorn will be served!

Wednesday May 20th at 1pm, there will be a presentation entitled Understanding Your Medicare. You will receive valuable and unbiased information from CHOICES (Connecticut’s program for Health insurance assistance, Outreach, Information and referral, Counseling, Eligibility Screening). A representative from the North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) will be on site to provide this information and answer all your questions. Don’t miss this opportunity to lean more about your benefits and all available options for Medicare coverage!

Friday May 22nd at 8:30am, we will offer the “AARP Driver Safety” course. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

The Somers Senior Center is offering 2 bus trips in May. The first is to the U.S.S. Chowder Pot IV in Hartford for lunch on May 8th. The second is to the Keep Homestead Museum, home of the largest button collection in the country, on May 19th followed by a stop for lunch.

Day trips being offered include Kennebunkport, Maine on July 15th, Newport, Rhode Island on August 19th, and Winnipesaukee Railroad in New Hampshire on September 29th! In Maine, you will enjoy a lobster dinner at Mike’s Clam Shack in Wells, a guided driving tour of Kennebunkport, and time to shop in the quaint village. Cost is $90 per person. In Newport, your trip includes lunch at George’s of Galilee, a one hour narrated harbor cruise, plus free time to walk the waterfront area all for just $108 per person. Climb aboard the Lake Winnipesaukee Railroad and enjoy the famous Hart’s Turkey Farm Dinner, a visit to Kellerhaus and the New Hampshire Liquor Shop. A gorgeous fall daytrip for just $95 per person.

The Somers Senior Center plays BINGO on Mondays at 11:30am and Thursdays at 12pm. Chair aerobics is offered on Mondays and Thursdays at 10am. Dominoes and Wii bowling take place on Wednesdays at 1pm. Pitch is played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1pm and Pinochle takes place on Tuesdays at 12:30. The knitting group meets on Tuesdays at 9am and the Art Group gathers on Fridays at 9am. Please join us!
