Somers Soccer Advances in Class S Tournament

The Spartans defeated St. Paul Catholic on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon, the No. 17 Somers High School girls' soccer team defeated No. 16 St Paul Catholic 2-1 in the first round of the State Class S tournament.

Kathryn LaVallee started the scoring just one minute into the game on an assist from Erin Pfeifer and scored her second goal just four minutes later taking a baseline feed from Jaclyn O’Grady and placing it in the corner.

Somers continued the pressure but couldn’t capitalize on many chances, including a shot that deflected off the crossbar. St Paul had limited opportunities but did manage a breakaway chance that was thwarted by Spartan goalie Hailee Stetson.

St Paul got right back in the game just 38 seconds into the second half when the Somers defender slid on the wet surface attempting to clear the ball and it was picked off and fed ahead to Jillian Kilmer who beat Stetson with a low shot to the corner.

The game went back and forth for the next 20 minutes but Somers took a territorial advantage after that. The Spartans nearly scored several times, including one fray that started with forward Amanda Roberts curling a volley that hit the left post. The rebound came to LaVallee who volleyed it off the crossbar and caromed across the goal line before the St. Paul defender could clear it.

O’Grady had consecutive shots from 25 yards that the Falcon goalie made outstanding saves on. The last few minutes went by without any tying chances from St. Paul.

Stetson was a standout in goal for the Spartans while they also received strong defensive play from Caroline Gamble and Kylen O’Hearn. Roberts and Pfeifer played strong on offense.

Somers will travel to Danbury on Monday to take on 4-time defending Class S champion Immaculate.
