Somers Tops Ellington in Lacrosse Semifinals

The top-seeded Spartans seek their second straight Class S championship.

GRANBY, CT — In a battle of North Central Connecticut Conference rivals, Somers got the better of Ellington in the Class S boys lacrosse semifinals, picking up a 15-8 victory Wednesday at Granby Memorial High School to continue its bid for a second straight state championship.

Dom Giachello tallied five goals and Joe Mongillo added four to pace the Spartans' offense. Christian Paley and Dante Giachello each scored a pair of goals, while Avery Foye and Riley Burgmyer netted one apiece.

Goalkeeper Chris Allen stopped 17 shots to earn the victory.

Ellington was led by Steven Moller's three goals and two by Colby Unterstein. Hunter Neal, Blake Printy and Zack Dougherty each scored once for the Knights. Sam Greenberg had 10 saves.

Top-seeded Somers (18-1) will take on No. 2 Waterford (18-1) in the championship game Saturday at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. Game time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
