Summer Palooza set to aid Somers Athlete

In the fall of 2013 the concept of a Christmas Palooza, a huge party with friends and neighbors, was hatched by Somers resident Kevin Roberts to raise money for the Nicholas Coleman Scholarship fund. The event, which was held in December 2013 raised over $8,000 to assist Somers High School students with college scholarships. The event proved so successful, it became instantly clear that Christmas Palooza II was inevitable.

None could foresee that young Alex Coverdill, a talented rower from Somers, would earn a spot on the USA rowing team and be invited to try out for international competition this summer. That surprise announcement, as well as the hefty price tag associated with participation in these types of events, gave life to what is now being called Summer Palooza.

On June 7, 2014 at the Knights Of Columbus Hall located at 236 Main St. in Somers, Ct. Palooza returns to kick off the summer and to assist young Coverdill to fund his dream of rowing for his country. The festivities begin at 6:30pm and include appetizers, full dinner, DJ, Dancing, Basket raffles as well as a 50-50 raffle and a karaoke contest with prizes to the top 3 participants. Tickets are $20 to this event. “this one will be even better” says Roberts, “but the last one was great”.

What makes Palooza the party of the season. “the food is phenominal” says Rich Tynan co-sponsor of the event. “Fran Sullivan caters Palooza and nobody does a better job”. Sullivan, a Somers resident as well has done many of these events and always offers a great variety of entres not usually found at fund raisers. “But it is more than that, the town has so many people that step up to help, to donate, to make it fun” says Tynan. The karaoke contest at the December event was described as “epic” and is being brought back by popular demand.

All funds raised at this event will go to the Alex Coverdill Team USA fund and a portion will go to Alex’s rowing club, the Pioneer Valley Riverfront club. For Tickets and information please contact Rich Tynan at 860-280-6505. Tickets are on sale now. Anyone interested in donating to the event may also contact Tynan as well.
