Submerged SUV Pulled From Shenipsit Lake Reservoir Was Stolen

Police are searching for the person who stole a Ford Escape and then drove it into the lake.

UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.

State police have said the Ford Escape found partially submerged in the Shenipsit Lake Reservoir Tuesday morning was stolen.

“The vehicle appeared to have been driven into the water,” Trooper Ronald Richards wrote in his report.

Members of the Ellington Fire Department entered the water and found the vehicle unoccupied; it was later removed without incident.

A check of the license plate revealed the SUV is owned by a Vernon resident, who reported the vehicle had been stolen.

Personnel from the Connecticut Water Company were on scene, and determined there is no contamination of the water at this time.

Vernon police are continuing the investigation.

A light-colored SUV drove into the Shenipsit Lake Reservoir Tuesday morning, and state police are trying to locate the driver.

The incident was reported around 7 a.m. on an unpaved portion of Snipsic Lake Road.

The silver or gray Ford Escape was pulled from the northern tip of the reservoir. Fresh tire marks in the mud were seen leading directly into the reservoir.

Police have not yet released information about the owner of the vehicle.
