The Tattoo Explosion: A Cultural Phenomenon

Fascinating new exhibit at VCAC!

Did you know that tattooing has been practiced since Neolithic times, approx. 8000 – 6000 B.C.? Or that the first documented professional tattoo artist in the US lived in Boston? A May 2014 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll indicated that in 1999 just 21 percent of respondents said someone in their household had a tattoo. In 2014, that percentage doubled to 40 percent!

Vernon Community Arts Center, soon to be Arts Center East, is hosting The Tattoo Explosion: A Cutural Phenomenon from July 18 – August 15. Learn about the history of tattooing in the U.S. and abroad. See paintings, drawings and photographs of tattoos by tattoo artists and works by artists who have been influenced by tattoo culture.
