When you are a six foot four inch 19 year old life guard, you probably envisioned a sunny memorial day weekend a bit differently than it turned out to be for Brenden Coverdill of Somers. Instead of patrolling the local YMCA pool, he was positioned at a table in front of Kayman’s Liquors soliciting chocolate lollipop sales to help his brother Alex travel to Europe to row for team USA.
“My little brother made the USA crew team” he would tell people as they arrived at Kayman’s. Calling 16 year old Alex his little brother is technically accurate, but at six foot three and 220 pounds Alex redefines the term little brother, and we are hoping he redefines previously established standards for rowing as well.
Brenden spent five hours selling chocolate to customers. People came from the hair salon, Geisler’s Supermarket employees stopped in, and Kaymans customers showed tremendous generosity in making donations. Many turned down the tempting lollipops but couldn’t resist a chance to discuss where or how a kid from Somers became a rower. Some folks paid for lollipops and instructed Brenden to give them to the kids that came by. Friends, neighbors and strangers responded to the needs of a member of team USA.

Rich Tynan, the coordinator of the fund raising efforts for Alex says that $270 were raised in lollipops sales. “We may have to do this again” said Tynan, “this will all be added to the funds that will come from the benefit that is planned to help Coverdill represent his country”. That event is open to the public and is on schedule to be held June 7, 2014 at 6:30pm at the Somers Knights of Columbus Hall. A full evening of appetizers, dinner, dancing, Karaoke contests and raffles is planned and tickets are on sale now for $20.
Anyone interested in donating to the event or the raffles, or to purchase tickets, should contact Rich Tynan at 860-280-6505. “we are going to find this kid that $6,000 and he is going to do amazing things I just know it” Tynan said.
