Press release from the Town of Ellington:

Sept. 15, 2020

As the leaves begin to turn, the scene is setting on a community favorite: the 4th Annual Scarecrow Contest! This year, our Beautification Committee is partnering with the Nellie McKnight Museum, which will be matching the festivity of the Town Green.

Scarecrow displays will begin popping up on the Green beginning Thursday, October 1st, and will remain there throughout the month for residents to stroll amongst and enjoy. Fan Favorite voting will take place online beginning October 12th, and entry forms are due to the First Selectman’s Office by Friday, October 16th; these can be found at Town Hall, and the website has both an online option and a PDF form available for download.

A new facet to the festivities is being added this year as well; the Nellie McKnight Museum is having a Grand Opening on October 17th to debut their new farm building, located in back of the museum, and to add to the fun, the Beautification Committee will be hosting a pumpkin carving/decorating contest. Your pumpkin will be displayed and voted on at the Grand Opening; no entry form is required, but your contribution to the contest needs to be identifiable, whether that be a tag around the stem, contact information marked on the bottom, etc. Entries are to be placed in the display area at the Museum by 9:30 am on Saturday, October 17th, and should be taken home or disposed of by end of day Sunday, October 18th.

There will be things to see and things to do, and all are encouraged to come down to the center of Town from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm on October 17th and enjoy the day; you can visit the scarecrows, check out the new features of the Museum, and vote on your favorite pumpkin! Please note that all current guidelines are to be followed during the event, including but not limited to social distancing, wearing a mask, and not attending if you’re feeling ill. In the event of inclement weather, there is a rain date of October 24th for the Grand Opening.
