Vote No to 7.58% tax increase in Ellington

Dear Ellington residents,
As concerned citizen and taxpayer, I am urging you to join me in voting NO to the proposed town budget that comes with a staggering 7.58% increase in taxes. Such a significant tax hike is unreasonable for several reasons.

First, an increase of 7.58% in taxes places a heavy burden on hardworking families and fixed income individuals who are already struggling to make ends meet. In a time of rising costs of living, this tax hike will only add to the financial strain faced by many in our town. Your house taxes could very well go up another $1000 dollars from just last year!
Did you get a 7.58% raise this year? That means you are losing money. It is unfair to expect residents to bear the brunt of irresponsible budget planning through exorbitant tax increases.

Additionally, a 7.58% increase in taxes sets a dangerous precedent for future budget planning and fiscal responsibility. Approving such a significant tax hike without proper scrutiny opens the door to unchecked spending and a cycle of ever-increasing taxes. It is essential for residents to hold their local government accountable and demand transparency and fiscal prudence in budget decisions.

I believe that by voting NO to the proposed 7.58% increase in taxes, we are sending a clear message to our local officials that we demand fiscal responsibility and fair treatment of taxpayers.

I also believe this is a calculated effort by Republican elected officials to increase this year’s taxes in bad faith to only lower taxes during the next election year to appear “heroic”. We need to stand against this hypocrisy.

Also, the Republican narrative says “it is only a Mill rate increase of 2.6.” That translates to a 7.58% increase in taxes!

For those worried about the teachers, I share your concern. There is plenty of room in the budget for adjustments without having to cut teaching positions or salaries.

In conclusion, I urge my fellow residents to consider the implications of approving a budget with such a substantial tax increase and to vote NO in the upcoming referendum on May 28th. Let us stand together in advocating for a more transparent, efficient, and responsible approach to budget planning that prioritizes the needs of the community without unduly burdening its residents.
