I was in the Air Force and was in a meeting at the office at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. My wife Kathie was at home in our base housing. That day was our first wedding anniversary, and Kathie was due to deliver our first child (who arrived one week later). The day before, on November 21, 1963, we had seen President Kennedy when he visited the base on his Texas tour, and Kathie shook his hand as he came along the line. There was a lot of confusion in the office as bits and pieces (including rumors, of course) of information came in from various phone calls, but the mood was very grim very early, well before the president's death was reported.
