Winter Team State Championship History: Ellington and Somers

ELLINGTON-SOMERS, CT — As practices for high school winter sports officially get underway across Connecticut Monday (girls basketball, ice hockey and wrestling) and Thursday (boys basketball, indoor track, boys swimming and girls gymnastics), hopes run high for all teams to achieve the ultimate goal: winning a league championship, and possibly a state title.

To help squads get into the championship mentality, here is a listing of the 11 CIAC winter team titles won by Ellington and Somers high schools in past years (* - indicates a co-op team).

Ellington

• girls basketball (4) - Class M: 1997, 1983, 1982; Class S: 1981
• boys basketball (2) - Class S: 1972, 1963
• boys indoor track (1) - Class S: 2001

Somers

• boys basketball (2) - Class S: 1994, 1992
• wrestling (1) - Class S: 2010
• girls basketball (1) - Class S: 1977
