3 Youths Caught Rifling Through Cars At Enfield Shopping Plaza: Police

Police said the three boys, ages 12 to 14, attempted to flee in a stolen car, but were captured with some help from a police dog.

ENFIELD, CT — A pair of 14-year-old boys and a 12-year-old were taken into custody Wednesday after being caught rifling through parked vehicles at the Brookside Plaza shopping center, then attempting to flee in a stolen car.

Police were dispatched at 2:23 p.m. upon a report of four males going through parked cars. Upon arrival, officers saw three males attempt to flee in a stolen 2012 Hyundai Elantra registered in Massachusetts. The vehicle became disabled and the males then fled on foot, Chief Alaric Fox said.

Police canine Dunkin was deployed to assist in the apprehension. The driver was apprehended by an officer, and a second suspect was taken into custody shortly thereafter. A third suspect fled into a retail store and changed into stolen clothing before being captured, Fox said.

Each of the three, none of whom were identified due to their age, was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, interfering with an officer and possession of burglar tools. The 12-year-old was additionally charged with sixth-degree larceny, Fox said

Two boys were remanded to the Hartford juvenile detention facility, and the third was released to a guardian. All three were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Rockville Juvenile Court, Fox said.
