ENFIELD, CT — Enfield native Ryan Palmberg began working out when he was a 130-pound 16-year-old student at Cheney Tech. Following a 6-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, where he was an F-22 crew chief, he began developing an interest in competitive bodybuilding, but always harbored dreams of owning his own gym.

That dream has become a reality, as Palmberg has just opened Conquer Fitness at 3-C Peerless Way, just off Shaker Road. It is "an all-inclusive facility, a private personal training facility with 1-on-1 attention," he said.

Palmberg has spent years studying all aspects of fitness, and has developed training, exercise, diet and nutrition programs for individuals and small groups.

While living in Virginia after his military service, he briefly worked as a personal trainer, but quickly became disenchanted with the expectations of his employer.

"I left that scene because I didn't enjoy the commercial environment and the idea that I had to sell training to people who weren't exactly looking for it," he said.

At one point, Palmberg weighed 260 pounds. After moving back to Connecticut, he began collecting pieces of equipment, and now has enough to open Conquer Fitness.

The name derives from the objective of helping people conquer their fitness goals.

"We all have our own obstacles and goals to conquer," he explained. "We're here to help you conquer your goals and dreams."

Visitors to the training center will undoubtedly be subject to a thorough examination by a security vest-wearing dog named Brute. Do not fear - Brute is a 4.6 pound chihuahua.

Palmberg's wife Summer is also a competitive bodybuilder. He said he recently competed in a national event in Arizona in the 195-pound division.

"This is a complete, absolute lifestyle for me; this is what I love," he said.
