ENFIELD, CT — Connecticut’s “Nickel per Nip” environmental fee has benefited not only the state, but Enfield as well, according to figures released last month.
In fact, the program has generated more than $22 million for municipalities statewide since its launch in October 2021, according to Larry Cafero, executive director and general counsel of the Wine and Spirit Wholesalers of Connecticut.
In the most recent reporting period—from October 2025 through March 2026—the program distributed $2.4 million across 170 cities and towns, including Enfield.
In Enfield, 830,836 nip bottles were collected during that period, resulting in $41,541.80 in new revenue for the town.
Under the program, municipalities receive 5 cents for every miniature liquor bottle, or “nip,” sold within their borders.
The funds are designated for environmental initiatives, including community cleanups, street sweeper purchases, composting programs, and recycling staff.
“Since this program began more than four years ago, every six-month reporting period has demonstrated that it works,” Cafero said.
“Cities and towns are getting much-needed revenue for environmental protection purposes, and they’re putting the money to good use.”
Cafero said the program’s success is reflected not only in consistent revenue distribution but also in how municipalities choose to spend the funds.
“The collection and distribution of the money is a success, but the true measure of success is how each municipality chooses to spend the money received,” he said.
The program applies uniformly across Connecticut, meaning each municipality receives funding based on local sales.
Officials have previously said the revenue supports local environmental priorities without requiring additional local taxes.
Cafero also credited state lawmakers and local governments for implementing the program.
“We remain grateful to our partners in the legislature and municipal government for creating this program and putting the funds to good use,” he said. “We look forward to continued success with the Nickel per Nip program.”
