ENFIELD, CT — A summer concert in Enfield will help support Enfield Food Shelf during one of its toughest times of year.

Knights of Columbus, Council 50 is hosting a benefit concert June 13 for Enfield Food Shelf. The event will feature the Savage Brothers at the Knights of Columbus, Council 50 Pavilion, 371 Washington Road.

Doors open at 2:15 p.m., and the concert starts at 3:30 p.m., according to the event flyer. Tickets are limited and available to purchase at the bar and at Enfield Food Shelf, according to organizers.

The event will include drinks, food, cornhole, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and activities for all ages. Outside coolers are not allowed.

Ernie Bouthiette, grand knight-elect of Knights of Columbus, Council 50, said the group wants to reach as many local people as possible to support Enfield Food Shelf.

Knights of Columbus, Council 50 has long worked with Enfield Food Shelf to help local families, according to Kathleen Souvigney, executive director of Enfield Food Shelf.

“For decades, the Knights of Columbus Council #50 has been one of Enfield Food Shelf’s most dedicated partners, supporting the thousands of local families who rely on our services each year,” Souvigney said.

Souvigney said the council’s support has helped provide items such as holiday meals, turkeys, hams and winter coats for children.

Summer is a difficult stretch for donations, even as the need remains high, she said. Through Enfield Food Shelf’s Lunch Link program, meals are provided to children when school is out, and healthy snacks are supplied to summer camps through the Before and After School Program.

“That’s why we are especially grateful to be the beneficiary of this summer concert,” Souvigney said.

Enfield Food Shelf dates back to 1968, when five local women from the same church saw a growing need for emergency food to help families, according to the organization’s website.

The women held food drives and used their own money to purchase food. Without a dedicated space, they stored food on shelves in their own homes, a practice that later became the source of the organization’s name.

Since then, Enfield Food Shelf has continued supporting food-insecure families. What started as an effort to help a few families has grown into an organization with nine programs to support people in need in different ways, according to Enfield Food Shelf.

The Savage Brothers are a Hartford-based six-piece band with a two-piece horn section, according to the band’s website. The band was established in 1984 and has performed across New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and as far away as Cancun, Mexico.

The band has shared the stage with acts including Tower of Power, Joan Osborne, James Cotton, Southside Johnny, NRBQ, The Guess Who, Marshall Tucker, Jimmy Vaughn, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers, John Cafferty and Los Lonely Boys, according to its website.

The Savage Brothers have released two full albums, including “Population 6,” and have given more than 6,000 performances, according to the band’s website. The band has also won several awards, including “Best of Hartford” from Hartford Magazine.

Souvigney said organizers hope residents will come out for music, food and a chance to support families in need.

“This promises to be a fantastic community event featuring great music by the Savage Brothers, food, drinks, cornhole, and activities for all ages,” Souvigney said. “There’s plenty of room, and we hope the community will come out, enjoy a great evening, and help support local families in need.”
