4 Families Displaced In Enfield

ENFIELD, CT — The American Red Cross is helping four families, including nine adults, after a fire on Maple Avenue in Enfield.

The fire broke out late Sunday night at 34 Maple Ave., where crews responded to a working structure fire at a two-story, wood-frame multi-family home, according to radio reports.

As the incident grew, a second alarm was requested and Task Force 52 was activated for mutual aid. South Windsor Fire Department officials said the department responded as part of the statewide fire service task force.

The fire happened while Enfield’s fireworks show was underway, with some local fire apparatus already committed to the fireworks detail, according to South Windsor fire officials.

Mutual aid companies were directed to stage at Enfield Square before assisting with coverage and other calls. South Windsor’s Squad 2 and Car 11 responded to the staging area, handled two incidents unrelated to the fire, and were later reassigned to provide station coverage in Enfield with other Task Force units, according to the department.

South Windsor’s rehab unit was also specially called to the fire scene to support firefighters working at the fireground. South Windsor crews returned shortly after 1 a.m., the department said.

No injuries were reported, all residents were able to get out safely and firefighters rescued a dog from the home, CT Insider reported, citing Thompsonville Fire Chief David Deskis.

The Red Cross said it provided assistance to meet the families’ immediate needs, along with recovery information for families dealing with cleanup, damaged items and other post-fire issues.

The organization also provided comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant and shaving supplies for residents suddenly displaced by the fire.

Those affected will connect with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to work on longer-term recovery plans, the organization said.

Red Cross responders included Larry Berman, Janice Iglesias, Camille Westfall, Anthony Williams, John Begina and Ginger Flynn.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal. CT Insider reported the home was heavily damaged and ruled uninhabitable by the local building inspector.
