ENFIELD, CT — Residents will have a chance later this month to weigh in on a proposed $511 million school construction plan that would reshape Enfield's elementary school system.
The Town Council has scheduled a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, in the Town Hall Council Chambers, 820 Enfield St.
The proposal calls for new PK-5 schools for Hazardville Memorial, Prudence Crandall, Edgar H. Parkman and Henry Barnard, along with the conversion of Eli Whitney Elementary School into the Eagle Academy Therapeutic Day School.
While the total appropriation is $511 million, the resolution would authorize Enfield to issue no more than $89 million in bonds or notes. The remaining $422 million would be funded through grants and other available money, according to the hearing notice.
The proposal therefore sets a maximum of $89 million in town borrowing, rather than $511 million in municipal debt.
District officials have previously described the plan as a shift from Enfield's current K-2 and grades 3-5 elementary school structure to PK-5 schools. The buildings named in the proposal date from 1954 to 1968.
