Enfield To Mark 25 Years Since 9/11

ENFIELD, CT — Enfield Fire District No. 1 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a public ceremony at its memorial garden next month.

The ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Enfield Fire Rescue Station 2, 199 Weymouth Road. It will be held rain or shine, the fire district announced.

The brief ceremony will remember those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, along with those who have died serving their communities and the country. Light refreshments will be served inside the firehouse afterward.

"It's important for us to continue to honor those who were lost on that day and in the aftermath of the attacks," Fire Chief Edward Richards said.

The first phase of Enfield's 9/11 Memorial Tribute Garden was built and dedicated in 2008. Two large beams from the World Trade Center were added three years later and unveiled during the ceremony marking the attacks' 10th anniversary.

According to the fire district, the beams were part of the support structure on the north face of the North Tower at about the 80th-floor level.

The garden also includes granite pillars, a pentagon-shaped granite slab, plantings and boulders representing the three attack sites: the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.

The memorial cost more than $37,000 and was funded entirely through private donations and donated labor and materials, according to the fire district.
