Enfield Seeks Help Caring For Its ‘Muffin Monster’

ENFIELD, CT — Enfield is looking for someone to keep its "Muffin Monster" running.

Despite the name, the machine has nothing to do with baked goods. It is a heavy-duty sewage grinder used to shred rags, trash and other debris before the material can clog pumps and pipes at the town's wastewater facilities.

The town issued a request for proposals Wednesday for a contractor to maintain and repair its JWC Environmental grinders, including Muffin Monster and Channel Monster equipment.

The contractor would provide replacement parts, routine maintenance, repairs and emergency service. The agreement would also include training for town employees on troubleshooting, diagnostics and replacing parts.

According to the manufacturer, Channel Monster equipment combines rotating screening drums with a grinder to break down rags, trash, rocks, wood and other solids into pieces small enough to move through pumps and treatment systems.

Companies interested in the contract must be certified representatives or distributors for the manufacturer and authorized to perform service on the equipment.

The town did not include an estimated cost in the bid documents. Proposals are due by 11 a.m. Sept. 30, and Enfield expects to select a contractor during the week of Oct. 5.

The initial agreement would run through June 30, 2027. The town could renew it for two additional one-year terms.
