ENFIELD, CT — Field hockey players from schools in three New England states gathered on Cookie Bromage Field in the Carl S. Angelica Memorial Stadium at Enfield High School Sunday, as the annual Amy Romano Memorial Field Hockey Scrimmage was contested on a perfect day for playing and remembering one of the most beloved athletes, coaches and teachers in Enfield history.

Romano, an inductee into three halls of fame who in 1997 joined her dad Tony as the first father-daughter duo ever honored by the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame, was head teacher at the Alcorn School when she died unexpectedly in Jan. 2007 at age 40. Later that year, the Hall of Fame created a memorial scholarship in her name; that fund is now entirely supported by the scrimmage, which debuted in 2009.

Several members of Romano's family were on hand, including her mother Judie, who dropped the ceremonial first ball between Enfield coach Amy Bartholomew, a member of the organizing committee, and Longmeadow coach Ann Simons, who has brought her teams to the event each year since its inception.
