ENFIELD, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • Eastern Connecticut State University has accepted a number of students into the highly selective University Honors Program. As a part of the program, students take additional classes and complete undergraduate research that culminates in a capstone thesis related to their major. Enfield students who have been selected are Emily Miclon, who majors in Music, and Jessica Miclon, who majors in English and Sociology. Each student is one of a select number of academically talented students that have been offered an avenue to demonstrate excellence in areas characteristic of the liberal arts. Students in the Honors Program also participate in the Honors Club, which provides opportunities for social, cultural, and educational interaction among members of the University Honors program, as well as interaction between the program and the campus community. For many students, this social aspect has been the key to their success in college.

Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven CT

  • Three Owls placed in the top 20 as the Southern Connecticut State University men's cross country squad placed third at the NCAA Regional Championships On Nov. 17, helping them to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time since 1999. Headlined by a 14th place (33:12.90) performance from Connor Shannahan of Enfield, the Owls were propelled to a third-place finish overall out of 24 teams.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • A pair of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) students from Enfield recently completed intense, hands-on research projects. Rachel Aston, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in mechanical engineering, was a member of a student team that completed a project in Santa Fe. The project was titled Investigating Metropolitan Traffic Congestion in Albuquerque. In their project summary, the students wrote, "Our project aimed to assist the New Mexico Department of Transportation in assessing Albuquerque congestion data." Thomas Vose, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in robotics engineering, was a member of a student team that completed a project in Glacier National Park. The project was titled Congestion Management in Glacier National Park. In their project summary, the students wrote, "Due to wildfires in Glacier, the team spent the first half of the term in Acadia National Park, where the project was tailored to their similar congestion situation, while still working towards the goals for Glacier. The objectives focused on alleviating congestion by providing park visitors with the information necessary to reduce congestion themselves."
