Class of 2019 Elected to Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame
Six individuals and a team will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sept. 6.

ENFIELD, CT — Six outstanding athletes, a pioneering coach and a highly successful baseball team will be the honorees at the 24th annual Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner in early September.
Soccer standouts Patrick Phelan and Ashley Kaufman, star wrestlers Steve Roy and Jim Olson, Connecticut field hockey Hall of Famer Lisa Scavotto and football phenom Jason Byrnes will be inducted, along with the 2001 Enfield High School baseball team, which played in the Class L championship game. Last month, original Fermi High School ice hockey coach Ed Mantenuto was announced as recipient of the George Daly Special Recognition Award.
The induction dinner is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Country Club in Feeding Hills, Mass. Tickets are $40, and may be obtained by contacting Lisa Carrara at lisamcarrara@gmail.com.

Here is a brief look at the 2019 electees.
- Jason Byrnes - Fermi High School wide receiver who is in the all-time Connecticut high school football record book with 2,946 career receiving yards (T-4th; was 1st at time of graduation, held record until 2002); 172 career receptions (T-3rd); 81 receptions in a season (1993, T-9th); and 28 career receiving touchdowns (T-15th). All-State player in 1992 and 1993 with over 1,000 receiving yards each season, including 1,193 in 1993. Averaged 17.1 yards per reception; had 14 catches in one game (10/29/93 vs. East Hartford); had 97-yard punt return for
touchdown in 1993 game. Scored 199 career points. - Ashley Kaufman - Two-time All-CCC soccer goalkeeper at Enfield High School. Also played ice hockey with Northern Lights team andsoftball at EHS. At Utica College, she was a three-time Empire 8 All-conference goalkeeper, posting a school record 18 shutouts with a 1.01 career goals against average while making the 2006 NYSWCAA All-State team. Played four years of ice hockey at Utica as a defenseman, scoring 35 points in 91 games. In a single season of college softball, she batted .394 with 43 hits and 25 RBI in 32 games. Elected to the Utica College Hall of Fame in 2014. Since 2014-15, she has been an assistant soccer coach at St. Lawrence University, Washington & Lee University and Yale University.
- Jim Olson - Won back-to-back Class LL wrestling championships at 132 lbs. in both 1980 and 1981; placed third in 1981 State Open. Co-captain of Fermi’s 1980 Class LL state championship team as a junior. Wrestled three years at Western New England College. Assistant coach at Fermi, then served as head wrestling coach at East Windsor High School from 1988-2006. Inducted into the East Windsor Athletic Club Hall of Fame in 2007. Founded Rodney Smith Classic wrestling tournament at East Windsor High School, which has been ongoing for more than 20 years.
- Patrick Phelan - Began his high school soccer career at Fermi before transferring to Loomis Chaffee, then to Wilbraham & Monson Academy, where he was Gatorade National High School Soccer Player of the Year in 2003. Played four years at Wake Forest University, making the 2004 ACC All-Freshmen Team, 2005 Top Drawer Soccer 2nd All-America team, 2005 NSCAA All-Region Team and 2007 NSCAA 1st team All-American and All-ACC. Captained the Demon Deacons to the 2007 NCAA national championship. First round draft choice (10th overall) by Toronto FC of Major League Soccer in 2008, then was traded to the New England Revolution, where he played four years. Played pro in Finland in 2012, then with San Antonio of North American Soccer League in 2013.
- Steve Roy - First Enfield High School state wrestling champion at 185 lbs. in 1977 with a 27-0 record, including 22 pins, and was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler at the State Open. Compiled a 43-2-2 record over his final two seasons. At Springfield College, he wrestled for legendary coach Doug Parker, the father of his high school coach, the late Kirk Parker.
- Lisa Scavotto - All-State and All-CCC field hockey player at Enfield High School, member of 1993 and 1994 state championship teams and three-time conference champions. Atlantic Region U16 Team for nationals, 1995 Junior Olympics, 1996 Futures U19 National Field Hockey Tournament, MVP of winning Cape Cod Classic Tournament team. Played Division I field hockey at Quinnipiac University. Elected to Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
- 2001 EHS baseball - Under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Bob Bromage, the Raiders compiled a school-record 15-1 regular season mark, good for the top seed in Class L, and advanced to the state championship game before falling to Bethel. Wound up with a 19-2 overall record.
