Some recent honors and achievements by college students from Enfield.

National Biological Honor Society

Kevin Connolly and Michael Crowley, both of Enfield, were among a number of Eastern students were recently inducted into Eastern's Eta Omega chapter of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society. The event recognizes students who major in biology and who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, research and other academic pursuits.

Biology Professor Elizabeth Cowles said, "We celebrate our biology students during the Biology Awards and the Tri Beta induction ceremony. Members of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society Eta Omega chapter must have a B or better average in their coursework. The department recognizes the top GPA student in each class year, the best independent study students, the most outstanding independent study students and those who bring recognition to Eastern through their actions."

The Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society was founded in 1922 and today has more than 175,000 lifetime members in more than 430 chapters throughout the United States. The Eta Omega Chapter at Eastern was founded in 1997.

Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival

More than 20 theatre students, faculty and alumni from Eastern Connecticut State University participated in the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) earlier this semester. This year, Region I of the KCACTF was held at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

Among the participants was Caraline Gartrell of Enfield, who majors in Communication and Theatre at Eastern.

Students competed in acting, design and technical theatre competitions; presented and attended workshops and shows; auditioned for festival shows and summer jobs/internships; and acted as festival interns and stage managers for festival productions.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Carly Roy of Enfield was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Roy was initiated at Westfield State University.

Roy is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on more than 300 college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

Lindo makes All-Northeast Region basketball team

Hugh Lindo of Enfield, majoring in Communication at Eastern Connecticut State University, has been selected to the D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region basketball team for the 2015-16 season.

Lindo, a junior, was voted to the team for the first time. He was one of two forwards selected to the third team. The all-region team included first, second, third and fourth teams, with 20 players making up the team.

Lindo averaged a team-leading 11.2 rebounds and was third in scoring (12.0) for the men's team which finished 18-9 and captured its third straight LEC regular-season championship. Lindo also topped the team in field goal percentage (54.4) and blocked shots, recording a program season record of 59 in the latter category. With one season remaining, Lindo is first all-time in blocks (145), third in rebounds (917) and fourth in field goal percentage (55.9).

Players are nominated and voted upon by the region's Sports Information Directors.

Mathematics Honor Society

A cohort of gifted mathematics students at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) national honor society this April. Among the inductees was Michaela Hanjack of Enfield, who majors in Mathematics and Elementary Education.

KME is a specialized honor society in Mathematics. It was founded in 1931 to promote the interest of mathematics among undergraduate students. Its chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing which offer a strong mathematics major. Members are selected from students of mathematics and other closely related fields who have maintained standards of scholarship and have professional merit, and have attained academic distinction.

ECSU Business Students Inducted into Honor Society

On April 19, Eastern Connecticut State University inducted select students into the Delta Omega chapter of Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society for business administration and related disciplines.

Among the inductees were Enfield residents Heather Murray, a Business Administration major, and Austin Theobald, a Finance major.

This society recognizes outstanding students in Business Administration, Accounting and Business Information Systems. Membership in Delta Mu Delta is an honor indicative of earnest, intelligent purpose and rewarding achievement, the goals of the honor society.
