ENFIELD, CT — Motorists heading from northern Connecticut into Massachusetts needed to find an alternate route to Interstate 91 Tuesday afternoon, as the northbound side of the highway was backed up for several hours due to a crash at exit 3 in Springfield.

As of 3:30 p.m., traffic was stopped from the crash site all the way to exit 47 in Enfield, a distance of more than five miles. Motorists on social media began reporting clearer passage around 4:30.

Many vehicles were seen leaving the interstate at exit 49, the last exit before Massachusetts, causing some slowdown on Route 5 as well.
