ENFIELD, CT — The deliery guy in two fatal Enfield heroin overdose cases has been sentenced to prison, a leading prosecutor said.

John H. Durham, United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, said that Jonathan Reed, 34, of Enfield, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford to 12 months and one day in prison for distributing heroin and fentanyl.

The case stems from an ongoing statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl or opioids that cause death or serious injury to users, Durham said.

According to court documents and statements made in court, at approximately 9:52 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2016, Enfield Police and emergency medical personnel responded to a local residence and found an unresponsive 31-year-old male slumped over a coffee table in the upstairs bedroom.

The man was eventually pronounced deceased, according to a case records.

Officers searched the immediate area and seized one empty white wax fold and six full white wax folds that contained suspected heroin, according to a case records. Officers also seized the victim’s iPhone and an analysis of text messages revealed that the victim had ordered heroin from Reed the evening before the victim died, according to case records.

At 8:23 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2016, the Enfield Police Department and emergency personnel responded to another residence in Enfield and found an unresponsive 36-year-old man outside the house.

The man was transported to the hospital for medical attention and was later pronounced deceased, case records show. Officers were later able to recover the victim’s cell phone and 20 white wax folds that contained suspected heroin, Durham said. An analysis of the victim’s cell phone revealed that the victim also had purchased heroin from Reed two days before his death, he said.

Reed was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on April 27, 2017. On November 20, 2017, he entered a guilty plea to one count of distribution of heroin and fentanyl, according to a case records.

The investigation revealed that Christopher Barreto, of Hartford, supplied the narcotics that Reed subsequently distributed to the overdose victims, case records show. On Dec. 18, 2018, Judge Shea sentenced Barreto to 46 months of imprisonment.
