Dual Championship Teams To Be Feted At Enfield High School Hockey Game

The 1983 Enfield and Fermi high school hockey teams made history 40 years ago, becoming the only Div. I and II champions from the same town.

On the 35th anniversary of the Enfield and Fermi dual ice hockey state titles, Fermi players Bill Marino, Rob Harmon and Eric Haglund were joined by Enfield goaltender Dan Burnham and coach Phil Clarkin.

ENFIELD, CT — It's hard to imagine four decades have passed since Connecticut high school hockey history was made by a pair of squads from Enfield. On March 12, 1983 at the now-defunct New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Fermi won its first of two championships by defeating South Windsor 8-5 in the Division II final, then Enfield, fresh off its Div. II title a year earlier, capped a perfect season by winning the Div. I crown in double overtime by a 5-4 count over defending champion Notre Dame of West Haven.

Never before had two public high schools from the same town captured both championships, and the current norm of mainly co-op programs has rendered that possibility unlikely in the future.

The two programs combined as a co-op in the early 2010s, eventually adding East Granby and Stafford to the mix. Fermi closed in 2016, and the names Raiders and Falcons were retired at the consolidated high school in favor of Eagles.

This season, the team sports a 9-5 record and will be playing in the Div. III tournament beginning in early March, but this Friday, the team will be celebrating its predecessors.

A brief ceremony commemorating the historic day will be conducted prior to the Eagles' 7:45 p.m. game against the Rocky Hill co-op at the Enfield Twin Rinks. A handful of players from both teams are expected to be in attendance, and a remembrance of their seven teammates who have passed away will take place.
