ENFIELD, CT — The Enfield Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday night easily approved a special permit for the operation of a new used car dealership on Palomba Drive.

Machem LLC had applied to the PZC to conduct the operation, which is called "Buy Center of Enfield," an offshoot of Gale Toyota, which is across the street from the site.

At the May 25 PZC meeting, Somers resident Michael Green went before the commission on behalf of the applicant and explained the existing operation was a means for the company to buy cars only from the public for redistribution.

He said the applicant hoped to be able to sell used vehicles at the 33 Palomba Drive site rather than across the street at Gale or at other sites.

The goal is for that site to operate like a traditional dealership where the public can come and purchase used vehicles as well as sell them.

Ultimately, PZC special permit approval was deemed necessary in order for Buy Center to get the necessary state Department of Motor Vehicle licenses to sell at 33 Palomba Drive.

Action last month was postponed to Thursday to give the applicant time to fine tune its application and clear up any confusion about it.

"There are quite a few conditions that, basically, require you to change the name and paperwork of the facility," said Enfield PZC Chairman Lewis Fiore Thursday night.

Since 33 Palomba Drive is located in a part of town featuring may automotive-theme businesses, including dealerships, PZC members had no problem with the location.

Satisfied all the documentation and paperwork was sufficiently complete, the commission voted 6-0 with one abstention to approve the special permit.

The one abstention was from a member who wasn't present last month.
