NAGS HEAD, NC — A 36-year-old man from Enfield apparently drowned late Wednesday afternoon near a popular fishing pier in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, according to multiple media sources in the Tar Heel State.

The man, who was not identified, was reported to be in distress in the Atlantic Ocean around 5:50 p.m. about 50 yards north of the Nags Head Fishing Pier. Police, fire and rescue personnel pulled the man from the water and initiated lifesaving procedures, but he later died at the Outer Banks Hospital, according to WRIC-TV.

WVEC-TV reported the death was the third in the past week of swimmers on the Outer Banks.

As of 3:40 p.m. Thursday, Nags Head Deputy Police Chief Chris Montgomery had not yet returned a message from Patch seeking further information.
