ENFIELD, CT — Local school officials were recently notified the Enfield School System now qualifies as a state-approved "Alliance District," a special state program targeting school districts struggling to perform academically.

Enfield Superintendent of Schools Christopher J. Drezek notified the board of education of the new classification at the May 31 special school board meeting under his superintendent's report, according to meeting minutes.

So-called "Alliance Districts" are "school districts with among the lowest accountability index measures in the state," reads a description on the state of Connecticut's website.

Drezek said he's reached out to Ellington's legislative delegation and town officials about what such a desigation means to the town's school system, meeting minutes indicate.

He said in the meeting minutes the definition for becoming an "Alliance District" has changed.
Drezek did say Enfield will get protection as an Alliance District, so its budget cannot be reduced and there are also additional funding it is eligible for.

He said he will report back to the school board when more information is learned.
