Final Graduating Class Departs Fermi High School

ENFIELD, CT - For the 45th time, a procession of Enrico Fermi High School seniors ascended the stage Thursday night to accept their hard-earned diplomas. They also made history, being the last graduating class ever from the school.

With the town's two high schools consolidating into the Enfield Street campus this fall, the commencement exercises for Fermi's Class of 2016 was the final goodbye.

Emma Zorda, who graduated with high honors, will forever have the distinction of being the final student to receive a Fermi diploma.

203 students graduated, then celebrated with their families before departing for Nomad's in South Windsor for a Safe Graduation party. One classmate, however, was not with them.

Jacob Carlander, who would have been a senior this year, passed away last August of complications from liver cancer. His family was presented an honorary diploma in his name, as thousands of spectators, including the entire graduating class, rose in a standing ovation.

Alumni were acknowledged during the ceremony, with several members of the original graduating class of 1972 in attendance. Coleen Deschenes, one of those initial graduates, was on hand to witness the graduation of her granddaughter, Jessica Baker.

Sarah O'Neil was valedictorian, and Rachele Lajoie was salutatorian.
