Flashback Friday: Do You Remember...?
An old advertisement and story of a business from Enfield's past.

ENFIELD, CT — In this weekly series, Enfield Patch remembers a business or landmark that is no longer in town through publication of old advertisements from some 1960s-1980s Enfield and Fermi high school yearbooks and early-1960s to mid-1980s telephone directories and newspapers.
Today we reach back into the depths of the 1982 Enfield High School yearbook for an ad from a former grocery shopping center smack dab in the middle of town: Enfield Food Warehouse.
Located in a small strip plaza at 138 South Road, the store was a precursor to the warehouse-style outlets that were to follow, such as Edwards Super Food Store; expansion of simple grocery stores into one-stop supermarkets, like Stop & Shop and Big Y; and discount price clubs such as Costco and Sam's.

The beleaguered plaza, once vibrant and full of a variety of businesses since its construction in 1960, is virtually empty. The recent departure of the Enfield Child Development Center leaves only a Chinese takeout food facility, a pizza restaurant and a convenience store as tenants. Enfield land records indicate the 6.86 acre property was purchased for $1.9 million in 2008, but by 2014, ownership had been taken over by the American Eagle Financial Credit Union.
Enfield Patch invites readers to share their memories in the comments section below.
