Four Enfield Fire Districts To Discuss Possible Merger

ENFIELD, CT — Four of Enfield’s five fire districts will hold a public forum Wednesday night to discuss combining into a single district.

The forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the North Thompsonville Fire Station, 439 Enfield St., near the corner of Brainard Road.

The proposal involves the Thompsonville, North Thompsonville, Shaker Pines and Hazardville fire districts, according to an announcement from Shaker Pines Fire Department.

Enfield Fire District No. 1, which covers a large portion of eastern Enfield, is not included in the proposed consolidation.

Enfield is currently served by five independently governed fire districts. Each district maintains its own department, budget and governing board while working with the others through automatic mutual-aid agreements.

A consolidation committee has been meeting for several years to explore whether four of the districts should be combined. The committee’s online records include meeting minutes dating to 2022.

Wednesday’s meeting is being described as an informational forum. The districts have not announced a vote or released details about how consolidation would affect staffing, stations, equipment or fire taxes.

Enfield Fire District No. 1 says the town’s five departments already work together through organizations covering training, fire prevention, chiefs and fire marshals. More information about the town’s current system is available on the district’s website.
