Funeral Services Announced for Former Enfield Police Chief Herbert Foy

The 40-year veteran of the Enfield Police Department died on Monday.

Herbert “Herb” John Foy, 87, Retired Chief of Police for the Town of Enfield and beloved and devoted husband of 64 years of Marjorie “Marge” (Brehurt) Foy, passed away peacefully Monday, February 9, 2015 at his Enfield home surrounded by his loving family.

Herb was born July 22, 1927 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA and was the son of the late James William Foy Sr. and Mary Ellen (Smith) Foy.

He attended Springfield schools and was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School, Class of 1944. With World War II in full conflict, immediately upon graduation, Herb joined the US Navy with his best friend, Raymond Pagella. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War he once again volunteered to serve his country and returned to active duty with the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater in waters adjacent to the Republic of Korea for two years.

Upon returning to the United States, Herb passed the exam for the Enfield Police Department and became a member of the department in 1955. In 1994 Herb retired from the department as Chief of Police with 40 years of service.

For the next 15 years he was employed as Assistant Emergency Management Director for the Town of Enfield. This completed his professional career in public safety with 55 years of service to the citizens of the Town of Enfield.

Herb was recognized by his community with numerous awards which included Enfield Patriot of the Year Award in 2009 and Man of the Year Award by the Enfield Elks in 2008. Herb was a devoted and longtime communicant of St. Patrick Church, where he served as usher and on many committees. He was a member of many social, civic and veteran’s organizations in the Enfield Community during his lifetime.

Besides his devoted wife Marge, Herb is survived by his loving son, John H. Foy of Springfield, MA and his loving daughter, Mary Beth Kronoff and her husband Chip of Chicopee, MA; his cherished grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Terlesky of Suffield, John and James Foy of FL, Kathleen Foy of Springfield, MA and Michael Foy of East Longmeadow, MA; his great granddaughter, Kasey Foy of Springfield, MA; his sister-in-laws, Audrey, Gloria, Muriel and Beverly; his brother-in-law, Stanley and many many friends in Enfield.

He was predeceased by his son, James Michael Foy in 1977.

Herb will miss his lifelong friends from grammar school to present day, Raymond and Frannie Pagella, his breakfast club and dance club friends.

Herb’s family especially thanks JMH Hospice, Home & Community Home Care, and Comfort Keepers for the wonderful care they provided to Herb. May God bless you all!!!!

A Mass of Christian Burial for Herb will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13 at St. Patrick Church (please meet at Church), in the Thompsonville section of Enfield with full police department honors followed by burial in St. Patrick’s King Street Cemetery with full military honors.

Herb’s family will receive relatives and friends at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 12.
