Beloved Enfield Fire Official Passes Away At 74

Friends and family will gather this week in Enfield to honor the longtime fire service volunteer and community leader.

ENFIELD, CT — A decades-long pillar of the Hazardville fire service — known for his steady leadership, technical expertise and deep community ties — has died.

Thomas “Kozy” Kozikowski, a lifelong Enfield resident and active commissioner of the Hazardville Fire District, passed away Feb. 27, 2026, with his family by his side, according to an announcement from the Hazardville Fire District and his published obituary. He was 74.

Born in 1951, Kozikowski was raised in Enfield and graduated from Enfield High School in 1969. He later earned an engineering degree from Western New England College, according to his obituary.

Kozikowski served the Hazardville Fire Department from 1972 to 1989 as a firefighter, second engineer and treasurer, and returned in 2004 as fire commissioner — a role he held until his death, the fire district said. He was named Firefighter of the Year in 1975 and received several departmental commendations during his service, according to his obituary.

Outside the firehouse, he worked for many years in the insurance industry as a fire protection consultant, bringing professional expertise in fire safety and prevention to his volunteer service, according to his obituary.

The fire district described Kozikowski as deeply respected for his leadership and commitment, noting he mentored younger firefighters and remained active in the department for decades.

He also volunteered for more than 30 years with the Four Town Fair and served 20 years as president for Enfield, according to his obituary.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Janis; five children and their families; several grandchildren; his brother, Ronald; and many close friends, including Hazardville Fire Chief Jack Flanagan, according to his obituary.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, according to the obituary. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave., Enfield. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hazardville Fire Department or the Connecticut Humane Society, according to the obituary.
