July 20: It's National Lollipop Day

Some little-known facts about lollipops, plus some great vintage candy commercials.

1. According to the National Confectioners Association Web site, today is National Lollipop Day. Honey on a stick is said to have been around since cavemen roamed the earth, so if you consider that a “lollipop,” that may be your closest answer as to who invented it, because no one really knows. However, it is generally believed that George Smith, the owner of a small, American candy store, first called the sweet a “lollipop” in the early 1900s, which he named after his favorite race horse, Lolly Pop. In any case, celebrate the day by grabbing a lollipop at your local candy shop or convenience store, and enjoy.
