LETTER: State Should Better Maintain Land Along The Highway

ENFIELD, CT — I was, again, saddened to read about another rollover crash on I-91 in town. I’m also disgusted how the state is not maintaining the land along the highway.
I’m wondering why the state doesn’t mow the grass at the entrance and exit ramps at this end of the state. It’s been going on for several years when they might mow twice a year up this way. The rest of the state doesn’t look like this.
Besides the fact that it looks like crap when you come into town, and it could possibly be harboring wild animals that jump into traffic without notice, could be a fire hazard with dry conditions (not this year); it causes this little old short lady the inabilities to see over the tall grass and brush. Exit 49 is especially messy and overgrown.

Enfield has a blight ordinance and I think the town should take some action against the state to clean up their property. I know if I was an adjacent property owner I would be complaining directly, but I’m not. I do care about my town and how it looks to outsiders. This one isn’t looking so wonderful for several years now. I’m embarrassed.
P.S. I happened to be on the highway yesterday and noticed they were mowing. But, really, they only seem to mow it once, maybe twice a year. It’s so overgrown and out of control. The state complains about the utility companies not maintaining their area, but the state is just as bad. They wait for a disaster to happen before they clean up.

I read in one of your articles that Enfield has a blight commissioner, and I never knew that. That person should take a ride around town more often instead of sitting in front of a computer doing Zoom calls. There are houses that need their grass cut, and maybe some neighborhood kids could help out - Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts earning badges maybe.
