Enfield Police Arrest Man on Child Sexual Assault Charges

The 67-year-old suspect is being held on $200,000 bond.

A 67-year-old man is in custody following his arrest by Enfield Police on charges he sexually assaulted a child.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect in connection with the assault of a girl who is six- to seven-years-old, according to Enfield Police Chief Carl Sferrazza. Because the arrest warrant file is sealed, Sferrazza said he could not release details surrounding the arrest.

John J. Newton, of 42-B Furnace Ave., Stafford Springs, was arrested March 5 on charges of fourth-degree sexual assault of a victim under 15 years old, risk of injury to a minor and illegal sexual contact. According to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website, the incident occurred on Dec. 1. He is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond and due back in state Superior Court in Enfield on April 10, according to the website.

This isn’t the first arrest of Newton on child sexual assault charges, according to the Judicial Branch website. Newton was arrested by Connecticut State Police at Troop C on Jan. 23 on five counts each of illegal sexual contact and fourth-degree sexual assault and one count of risk of injury to a minor, according the Judicial Branch. Bond on those charges was set at $200,000 and he’s scheduled to apear April 10 in state Superior Court in Tolland.
