ENFIELD, CT — Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?

That wasn't the case for U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who was in Enfield Thursday for an event hosted by state and Enfield leaders marking the start of new train station project in town.

Of course, senators still get hungry and Murphy was looking for some quick eats at a Jersey Mike's sandwich shop in Enfield.

That's when he ran into a former police officer and retired U.S. serviceman from the U.S. Army.

According to Murphy's 11:40 a.m. Twitter feed, the duo was ahead of the senator in line for lunch.

When the two men noticed Murphy, they decided to treated to a free lunch, Murphy said.

"I ran into Dave (former police officer) and Bill (retired army) at Jersey Mike’s in Enfield," wrote Murphy, who is in his second term in office. "They were ahead of me line and quietly paid for my sandwich as a thank you for my work on gun violence. So nice!"

Murphy, 49, has been in the national spotlight in recent days after the May 24 tragedy in Texas in which a young gunman shot and killed 21 people, mostly elementary school students, at a school in Uvalde, Texas.

The incident was eerily similar to the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in which 26 people, most of them elementary school pupils, were killed.

Murphy's emotional speech on the Senate floor the same day as the Texas shooting went viral and he is seen as a leader in the push for stricter gun laws to prevent the epidemic of mass shootings in the U.S.
