New Class Elected to Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame Class of 2020 will be honored at the 25th annual induction dinner on Oct. 4.

ENFIELD, CT — Six individuals and a pair of highly-successful teams will be honored at the silver anniversary celebration of the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame this fall, as the 25th annual induction dinner has been scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Oak Ridge Country Club in Feeding Hills, Mass.

Mark Dube, Karen Golden, Jim Hayden, Beth Pion and the late Joe Olko will be inducted into the Hall of Fame that day, while Bob Cressotti will receive the George Daly Jr. Special Recognition Award. The 1970-71 Enfield High School girls basketball team and the 1986-87 Fermi High School wrestling team will also be honored.

Mark Dube
1993 Enfield graduate. 3-year baseball starter, batting .357 and .400 in junior and senior seasons, All-CCC East in 1993. 3-year starter at Central Connecticut State University, captain as senior. 2-time Greater Hartford Twilight League all-star. As head coach in 2003, guided Fermi to first state tournament appearance since 1982.

Karen Golden
1985 Enfield graduate. All-State field hockey player on two straight Class M championship teams, co-captain of 1984 squad. In basketball, set school record with 36 points in a single game, captain in junior and senior years.

Jim Hayden
1975 Enfield graduate. 3 years of basketball, led Central Connecticut Interscholastic League in scoring in 1974-75, averaging 26.1 points per game, single game high of 44, made numerous postseason all-star teams. A top two-way football player, had 8 interceptions and was Raiders' leading receiver. Played 3 years of basketball at Central Connecticut State College.

Joe Olko
Attended Enfield High School in the mid-1930s. Won many golf tournaments in the 1940s and 1950s, finished runner-up in 1948 New England Public Links Championship. Set course record at Springfield Country Club with 5-under par 67 in 1949. At age 49, won WHYN tournament, shooting 71 to beat all pros and amateurs.

Beth Pion
2005 Enfield graduate. Scored more than 1,000 career points, helping team to .663 winning percentage in 4 years. At Becker College, scored 1,625 career points, most in school history for 11 years (broken in 2020). Averaged between 13.7 and 17.0 points and between 7.1 and 10.3 rebounds per game in college. Elected to Becker College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

Bob Cressotti
In addition to 40 years as high school coach and baseball school owner, he has devoted countless hours to volunteering with Special Olympics. Founded Enfield Mets team in prestigious Greater Hartford Twilight League. As town council liaison, was instrumental in passing resolutions to name Cookie Bromage Field and the Ben Aleks Wrestling Center.

1970-71 Enfield High School girls basketball
Coached by Andrea Russo, the Raiders posted a perfect 12-0 record, outscoring opponents by an average of 15.8 points per game. The team played some tough opponents, including South Windsor, Newington, Suffield, South Catholic and Holyoke Catholic. At the time, there were no girls basketball state tournaments.

1986-87 Fermi High School wrestling
Coached by Ben Aleks, the Falcons won their first CCC East championship with a school-best 21-2 record, then placed second to Berlin in the State Open. All-American Jose Navarro won his second straight State Open title at 105 lbs., Mike Dobrzycki was second at 126, Glen Galbraith was third at 132 and Don Friday was fourth at 119.
