Picture Enfield - Then And Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield history and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series takes us to page 205 of the 1983 Fermi High School yearbook, and an advertisement from the Hockey Swap & Shop. At the time, about 600 players were active in the Enfield Hockey Association, and the Enfield and Fermi high school teams pulled off an unprecedented feat by capturing the Division I and II state championships.
The Hockey Swap & Shop was the primary store for new and used ice hockey equipment in town during the boom period of the mid-1970s through the 1980s. Operated by the Griffin family, the store was originally located at 917 Enfield Street, then moved in 1984 to the new Brookside Plaza on Hazard Avenue. I am uncertain when the shop closed.
The small plaza on Route 5 later became the longtime home of Sarapes Mexican Restaurant before it moved to High Street. It now contains the One Love Jamaican Restaurant, as well as Julie's Laundromat & Cleaners.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was: "Of all the streets in the Presidential section of town, which one is spelled differently than the chief executive for which it is named?" The answer: Filmore Drive, a 6-house cul-de-sac off Buchanan Road at the southern end of the neighborhood. Why it was spelled with just one L is a mystery, as Millard Fillmore, the 13th U.S. president, obviously has a pair of Ls. Note to town officials: looks like the street sign and pole could use some white paint and a little Rustoleum. Kathleen Thomson was the first person to provide the correct answer.

This week's trivia question:
What was the score of the first game ever played by a team from the Enfield Hockey Association? Without blatantly Googling the answer, then copying and pasting it verbatim to pretend you're a know-it-all, post the answer in the comments section below under your real name (we'll see who follows directions).
